The Logitech MK540 is a quiet wireless keyboard that works with an included mouse. It was published in March 2018 and still offers a quick entry and a very good deal today.

It features a spacious keyboard with dedicated multimedia keys, programmable keys and touch-sensitive typing with minimal noise. The mouse is durable and moves smoothly with programmable gestures.

Plain and unattractive so far, isn’t it? But the real advantage of the MK540 is that it is armed against spills. And we’re talking about real blobs, as we’ll show you later in our review below…..

Below are step-by-step instructions.

Who is it for?

When it was released just over two and a half years ago, not surprisingly, many wondered if there really was a need for a different set of Logitech wireless keyboards and mice?

However, if you type a lot and are looking for a high-end keyboard without going through the mechanical route, you should take a serious look at the MK540 wireless combo.

Maybe you don’t like the clatter of a mechanical keyboard. In our office, however, we find it annoying, disturbing and intrusive. Especially for the people around them when they’re trying to work.

What about the ergonomics of different types of typewriters and chairs? Logitech thinks he’s got it under control.

And whether you work in a busy office like ours or at home behind a messy desk, you know the possibilities and risks of spillage all too well. And the longer you work, and the more coffee (or tea for our British cousins!) you need, the higher this possibility is.

Logitech believes it has found a solution with the MK540. Of course, you’ll have to pay a little more. But is it worth it? Let’s see what the main advantages are compared to these cheaper alternatives….

What we like about the Logitech MK540

This keyboard and mouse set is compatible with Windows and Chrome operating systems and can also be connected to the Mac.

This high-end keyboard was very well received on our desk during our test week. Mainly thanks to the curved plastic palm and wrist support. This integrated ergonomic support is a particular advantage for those who like to press the heel of their hand against the front of the keyboard and scratch their fingers.

We appreciate that you can choose between three print profiles. There are adjustable and extendable legs in the back. You can tilt it four or eight degrees. Of course, you can leave it. Not only do they meet personal preferences, but they also offer excellent ergonomics for different printing styles and postures. And as the focus on health and well-being in the workplace increases, it becomes more and more important.

The Logitech MK540 has a beautiful shape: wide and sporty, slightly profiled and sculpted. They guarantee an easy opening and a quality experience. Membrane switches are designed so that the keys feel comfortable and firm halfway through each keystroke, and when the keys come back, there is a comfortable and immediate action. We were surprised by the quality of the keys of the MK540 that we have at our fingertips.

Because the MK540 keyboard is bumpier than a click, it can maintain impressive silence – a feature that will please your closest colleagues. The MK540 offers a good balance between the tactile feeling of typing and an ear-friendly typing experience. But of course personal preferences play a role there.

But don’t underestimate their value, because they are set up as you would expect, with average rides like many manufacturers trying to reinvent the wheel these days.

You’ll find many Logitech MK540 keyboard shortcuts, covering everything from search, save and print to configure, close and calculate. It also includes 10 programmable buttons that you can customize with the Logitech Options application. This allows you to create your own shortcuts or choose from your favourites, which can save you a lot of time. The keys F1 to F8 can be reprogrammed, as well as the lock key and the keys above the numeric keypad.

A fun bonus is the special volume and media player buttons located on the sides of the Logitech logo just above the main keyboard. The usual media playback controls, with back, pause and rewind keys in the top left corner and mute, down and top keys on the right, are conveniently and intelligently separated. So there is no need to look when you click; the choice of the three to click is obvious, less when they are grouped in a group of six.

With Logitech’s durable, hard-wearing types, you don’t have to worry about keys fading. I’m sure they don’t have a laser, but we haven’t tested the sign in a long time to see if it’s true, but it looks good. We recommend that you read his online reviews to find out more.

The triple mouse that comes with the Logitech MK540 has a rubber texture on the sides, a minimally bumpy scroll wheel, and a smooth slide for comfortable scrolling with the mouse. There’s nothing unusual about it. The soft-touch coating, however, provides an anti-slip surface in the hand.

The clicks must have been very fast. Plus, the good news for left-handed people is that it has an ambidextrous shape that feels comfortable for both left- and right-handed people.

With only two buttons, there is no confusion unless you count the clickable and programmable central button. You can use the Logitech Options application to program the MK540 mouse. You can customize the scroll wheel button to perform various tasks, from changing applications and starting your Windows computer to closing a window or even shutting down your computer.

As a gesture, you can use the middle button to enlarge windows, switch virtual desktops, rotate objects, etc. by simply pressing the scroll wheel and scroll up, down, left or right.

All in all, it’s a very simple mouse. And there’s nothing wrong with that. Although it is not a travel mouse, it weighs only about 100 grams with the battery, making it easy to put in your pocket.

One of the best features of this keyboard is undoubtedly its unlimited lifespan on a single set of batteries.  According to Logitech, standard AA alkaline batteries should last three years for the keyboard and 18 months for the mouse. Okay, the mouse only stays on the board half the time, but 18 months with normal use is fine. Especially considering the fact that it runs on a single AA battery.

To be honest, the MK540 has this in common with other Logitech wireless keyboards. Although it’s certainly inconsistent and much more durable than the many short-lived wireless keyboard packages and no name packs you’ll find on Amazon.

The keyboard and mouse came to life as soon as we connected the included USB dongle to the computer. There’s no need for a driver. The keypad enters standby mode after a few minutes of inactivity, but comes back on immediately after pressing a key.

But what about his unique selling point, we hear you crying? That’s all I’m saying. So yes, we deliberately spilled coffee on him; our whole office came together, really intrigued, to see if there would be any consequences. Or if he does what Logitech claims: practically nothing.

The only Brit in our office who even sacrificed his afternoon tea. And precious English tea bags that his family sends him every few months!

To be sure we even rinsed the MK540 under the crane and cleaned it thoroughly. We shook it to give the water a good chance to get in. Then we’ll turn it upside down to scare him off.

We are very happy to report that after a few minutes of drying it worked perfectly, even if we let it dry deeper at night. It wasn’t at the same stage. It still worked without problems and without a wrench.

What we don’t like about the Logitech MK540.

Measuring 18 x 7.6 x 0.9 inches and weighing 1.9 pounds with batteries installed, the MK540 isn’t a mobile keyboard you’ll always want to put in your pocket when you’re on the move.

We found that the mouse buttons were a bit bent and cheap compared to the rest of the mouse. And it seemed a bit light, maybe because it only needs one AA battery, while most need two. But we got used to it after a while….

The Logitech MK540 can only be connected using the included dongle. There are no wired or Bluetooth connectivity options. Then don’t lose it!

And while it can be used with a Mac, support is limited and there’s no way to match keyboard shortcuts to MacOS features.

Review overview

Quiet but comfortable, spacious and programmable: The Logitech MK540 keyboard and mouse combination is for typists who want a touch-typing experience without too many clicks.

The keyboard’s impressive, thoughtful design includes everything you’d expect, plus a few additional features supported by Logitech Options software that makes it easy to customize your keyboard.

The mouse may only be of average design, feel and performance, but with the keyboard it is well-designed. Both will last for years. The USP of the MK540 keyboard is a protection against spills, against hot and cold water, and much more!

What’s more, there’s nothing great here in terms of innovation or flair, but a solid combination of wireless keyboard and mouse that offers a good and fair total offering thanks to the significantly extended battery life.
