A virtual private network is a useful security tool that helps you protect your privacy on the Internet while securing your connection with encryption and other features.

Most VPN users appreciate this tool because they remain anonymous online, protected from hacking or spying, and their information is not tracked or targeted by online marketers and other online stalkers.

But what happens if a VPN doesn’t work with your computer’s operating system?

Here are some of the common and well-known problems related to VPN connections:

  • Connection allowed but rejected
  • Connection is not allowed, but it is accepted.
  • Inaccessibility of locations outside the VPN server
  • Impossible to set up the tunnel

However, this article describes some solutions you can try if your VPN is not compatible with Windows 10, whether you just installed it, upgraded from an older version, or updated your computer.

How to fix a VPN that is not compatible with Windows 10?

Make sure you have a VPN profile and try to connect again.

If you don’t have a VPN profile yet, you may think your VPN is not compatible with Windows 10, but you need a profile to connect.

If it is for work, check the VPN or VPN application settings on your company’s internal network or contact an internal support specialist.

If it is for personal use, go to the Microsoft Store and see if there is an application for the service, then go to the VPN service’s website and see if there are connection settings.

Once you have a VPN profile, you can start the VPN by clicking on the network icon in the taskbar, selecting VPN Connection and clicking Connect. You can enter your username, password or any other login if needed.

2. install private internet access

Error: The file name is not specified.

The best way to resolve incompatibility issues is to make sure you have the right VPN tool compatible with Windows 10 from the start.

For private Internet access, we recommend a premium VPN that works perfectly with Windows 10 devices and offers premium security and private features.

From the highest level of encryption to IP cloaking that anonymizes your online presence and a strict “no logging” policy that protects your data from surveillance, AIP is your best choice when it comes to VPNs.

In addition, with AIP, your traffic is redirected through secure VPN tunnels that create multiple layers of privacy around you. Backed by multiple gateways with global coverage, PIA provides you with stable and reliable connections, ultra-fast servers and unlimited bandwidth.

Access to private internet

Why bother with VPN compatibility issues? Switch to PIA and enjoy seamless collaboration with Windows 10 devices.

3. the correct installation and configuration of a VPN

The VPN connection depends on both your operating system and your Internet service provider.

If your VPN is not compatible with Windows 10, first check how you installed and configured the VPN, then go to the VPN service’s website to install and configure it correctly.

Different ISPs generally have different plans and restrictions for Internet services. Therefore, it is important that you contact and/or consult your ISP if you have urgent questions.

4. look for hardware changes

Here’s how:

  • Right-click on Begin
  • Selecting the Device Manager

  • Right-click on the network adapters again
  • Select Scan to switch devices

The adapters are automatically reinstalled without the need to restart the computer.

Check your VPN or Windows updates.

Different VPNs have their own updates and/or versions. For example, Cisco pushes its own solutions, so you may have to wait until Cisco releases a compatible solution if your VPN is not compatible with Windows 10.

If your organization supports L2TP/IPsec connections, contact your IT administrator for assistance.

Note: Windows will only launch applications from the Windows Store. You should therefore contact your VPN service to find out if it offers a VPN application for Windows.

6. Verify that routing and remote access service are working.

To do this, open the Server Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

After confirming that both components are working, try to ping the VPN server at the IP address of the VPN client. First, verify that a TCP/IP connection exists.

Ping once, then, if successful, ping again using the server’s FQDN, not its address.

If the ping fails but the IP address is pinged successfully, there is a DNS problem because the VPN client cannot convert the server name to the IP address.

7. Verify the authentication process.

There are several authentication methods for VPN connections, both clients and VPN servers should have at least one method that is the same for both.

To check the authentication process, proceed as follows

  • Right-click on Begin
  • Select mileage

Error: The file name is not specified.

  • Enter MMC and press Enter or OK.

Error: The file name is not specified.

  • An empty Microsoft Management Console session opens

Error: The file name is not specified.

  • From the File menu, choose Add/Remove Snapshot.

Error: The file name is not specified.

  • Click the “Add” button to display the available snapshots.

Error: The file name is not specified.

  • Select “Routing” and “Remote Access
  • Click on Add
  • Click Close and the Routing and Remote Access snapshot will be displayed in the MMC.
  • Right-click on the list of VPN servers
  • Select properties
  • Click on “Authentication Methods” under the “Security” tab – a dialog box will open with the available authentication methods
  • Activate or deactivate the methods by checking or unchecking the corresponding checkboxes.

8. check your connection to the VPN server

If you are using a dial-up connection to the Internet, your remote user may not have connection privileges, so your VPN may not be compatible with Windows 10.

If so, check your remote access permissions on the Dial-up tab under User Properties in Active Directory Users and Computers or in the Remote Access Policy section.

If your domain is running in native Windows 2000 mode, the VPN server must be a member or connections will not be authenticated.

Also check the IP addresses, as VPN connections use two different addresses for the VPN client, one from the ISP and one from the VPN server.

Let us know if your VPN is still not compatible with Windows 10 after trying these solutions. If they worked for you, share your experience with us in the comments section below.
